How to get services in Chatham County

Most long-term supports are paid for by Medicaid, often through a waiver program. Start with Medicaid, then get on the program that fits. Where a program uses local offices, the office for Chatham County is shown.

Start here NC Medicaid · NC Department of Health and Human Services, NC Medicaid (Division of Health Benefits)

Apply online (opens in a new tab) · Call (888) 245-0179 · Your county Department of Social Services (DSS). Walk-ins are accepted at all local offices.

North Carolina is a 1634 state, so the Social Security Administration decides Medicaid when it approves SSI and people who get SSI get NC Medicaid without a separate application.

Adults and children who are blind or have a disability can qualify through the aged, blind and disabled Medicaid groups, which use different income and asset rules. A caseworker reviews deductions that may help you qualify.

For children: None. North Carolina has no TEFRA or Katie Beckett option. Children with complex medical needs can be referred to the CAP/C waiver.

If you work: Health Coverage for Workers with Disabilities (HCWD): full Medicaid for working people with disabilities ages 16 through 64. An enrollment fee or monthly premium may apply at higher incomes. Apply through your county DSS.

Steps

  1. Read the eligibility guide at medicaid.ncdhhs.gov/eligibility. If you are not sure you qualify, apply anyway.
  2. Apply online at ePASS (you need an NCID login). On the form, Medicaid is called "Medical Assistance."
  3. Or apply in person, by phone, by mail, by email or by fax with your county DSS.
  4. Tell the caseworker about your disability and send any papers they ask for.
  5. Read your decision letter. If you are approved, choose a health plan when asked.

Have these ready

  • Social Security numbers for everyone applying
  • Proof of income such as pay stubs or benefit letters
  • Bank statements and other asset information
  • Proof of your North Carolina address
